CH19 Yuna Meets Shinichiro

Meeting Shinichiro

After watching Shinichiro Sonidori's Olympic silver medal performance at the age of 28, Yuna begins to idolize him. When she learns that Shinichiro has retired that same year to coach at Meikoh Wind FSC, she immediately seeks him out. She manages to jump a Single Axel by only copying Shinichiro, impressing him. Recognizing her talent, Shinichiro begins coaching Yuna, making her his first ever student.[1]

At Meikoh Wind, Yuna befriends Riina Kojoh, an older skater who was in the club before Shinichiro's arrival. As time passes and Shinichiro is set to become the head coach, Yuna grows concerned for him, given his rapidly graying hair. To support him, she and Riina make a promise to become the top two skaters at Meikoh. However, a girl named Hikaru Kamisaki would later join the club, proving to be an generational prodigy and quickly taking Yuna's number 2 spot. Her overwhelming talent drives many members of Meikoh to quit, but Yuna pushes herself more than ever to prove her own talent and reclaim her position.[1] Her perseverance would inspire another clubmate, Yotsuha Ushikawa, to persist as well.[2]

At the Nagano training camp, Yuna befriends Kurumi Risu. They compete together in the All-Japans 3 times before her appearance in the story.[3]

Yuna first appears in the story during the Chubu Block Tournament, where 15 of the best skaters from the region compete for 5 spots to qualify for the All-Japan Novice. At the opening ceremony, she meets Inori Yuitsuka, an athelete who has risen from beginner to Level 6 in only two years. Riina Kojoh, now a designated Top Skater with Olympic experience, also attends the ceremony. Inori would go on to boldly asks her how to get into the Olympics, shocking everyone around.[4]

Yuna's secret

Hikaru, a seeded skater, opts to skip the block meet to study ballet in Russia as she is guaranteed a spot regardless. This means that Yuna has a real chance at winning the gold medal today. Set to skate in Group 2, Yuna promises to Shinichiro bring home the gold and prove that Meikoh Wind is the best club in Nagoya.[5] Before her turn, Yuna retreats to the washroom, where she comforts herself by role-playing with hand puppets. When she steps out, she finds Inori right outside, having overheard everything. Embarrassed, she ominously warns Inori to not tell anyone.[1]

Shinichiro is slightly concerned about Inori but instructs Yuna to stick to the plan, their key to victory being the Triple Lutz + Double Loop combo. However, desperate to prove her strength, Yuna upgrades her combo to a Triple Lutz + Triple Loop, the very jump that made Hikaru a "genius." This takes a toll on her stamina, causing her to make multiple mistakes in subsequent jumps. As she skates, she recalls Inori's question at the opening ceremony, believing that Inori's journey is filled with hopefulness that she can catch up by building experience, without ever knowing the anguish of being surpassed. For this, Yuna refuses to lose the medal to Inori, and executes her following 2 jumps and 2 spins without fail.[1]

CH19 Shinichiro and Yuna

After the performance

When she steps off the ice, Shinichiro lightly scolds her for not following the plan, though his pride is evident. Her score of 80.03 is announced, placing her in first. Shinichiro promises Yuna that they'll refine her program to incorporate more challenging jumps, so she can do even better next time. Yuna basks in the moment, happy with today's results.[1]

However, Yuna is unable to hold onto her number one spot as Inori takes the ice next. Though her elements are not as difficult as Yuna's, she adopts a GOEGOE-focused approach and overtakes her with a score of 81.20. The event comes to an end with Yuna taking the silver. Yotsuha, who finishes in 13th, is frustrated that Yuna couldn't win despite her hard work, but promises to keep chasing after her. Shinichiro once again reassures Yuna that he'll craft a program where she can make full use of the 3Lz3Lz + 3Lo3Lo, and they'll aim to win and march proudly to the All-Japans.[2]

At the All-Japan Novice A, Yuna skates before Hikaru and scores 105.43. Her combo jumps include the 3Lz3Lz + 3Lo3Lo, as well as a 2A2A + 3T3T + 2Lo2Lo in the second half.[6]

The next year, Yuna attends a training camp in Osaka held by the federation. At one point, she finds Hikaru and Iruka Okazaki facing each other in the locker room. Mistaking it for a confrontation, she panics and jumps between the two to mediate before realizing her misunderstanding. However, she then learns that Hikaru is having back pains, and is left concerned.[7] Afterwards, Hikaru would take a break from skating to recover from her injury.[8]

Soon after Hikaru's return to the club, she announces her decision to transfer to a new club in Tokyo. Yuna approaches her afterward, thanking her for being her clubmate. She expresses regret that this is how she regains her number 2 spot but promises to keep chasing after her, even from a different club.[9]
